Carl Wente, a German immigrant, bought his first piece of land in Livermore Valley, California, in 1883 – and made wine history. Five generations later, Wente Vineyards is the oldest continuously family-owned and operated winery in the USA. And another lasting achievement: The Wente Clone, cultivated from imported Chardonnay scions, is now the basis of over 75% of all Chardonnays in California. Christine, Karl, Aly, and Niki Wente continue to run the business – with Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Riesling from Livermore Valley. If you drink Californian wine, you often drink a little Wente.
